Make a Great Barrier Island Adventure of Wharf2Wharf

12 Aug 2026 Travel tips

There are running events, and then there are experiences.

After a six-year hiatus, The Aotea Great Barrier Island Wharf2Wharf is back! Known as New Zealand's Friendliest Marathon, this iconic event takes participants on an unforgettable journey across Aotea Great Barrier Island, from Port FitzRoy in the north to Tryphena in the south. Along the way, runners and walkers experience rugged bush tracks, coastal roads, stunning island scenery and the warm community spirit (think homemade baking stations!) that has made Wharf2Wharf a favourite event on the calendar. Book your entry here!

But if you're travelling all the way to Great Barrier Island, why stop at race day?

Bring Your Vehicle. Unlock the Island.

One of the best things about travelling to Great Barrier Island with SeaLink is the freedom that comes with bringing your own vehicle.

Aotea is a place best explored at your own pace. With over 280 kilometres of roads, hidden beaches, walking tracks, natural hot springs and remote coastal settlements, there's plenty to discover beyond the finish line.

Bringing your vehicle means you can pack everything you need for the weekend. Running gear, bikes, fishing rods, paddleboards, camping equipment or simply the comforts that make travelling easier. Once you arrive, you're free to explore every corner of the island on your own schedule.

Turn Race Day Into a Long Weekend

The Wharf2Wharf event takes place on Saturday, making it the perfect excuse to escape for a long weekend.

Arrive early and spend a day exploring before the event. Take a walk to Windy Canyon, soak in the Kaitoke Hot Springs, discover the island's spectacular beaches or simply enjoy the slower pace of island life.

After crossing the finish line, reward yourself with another day or two on the island. There is something special about waking up on Great Barrier without needing to rush back to the city.

The event may last a day, but the memories can last much longer.

More Than a Race

What makes Wharf2Wharf special isn't just the distance. It's the volunteers at the aid stations. The locals cheering participants along the route. The shared stories at the finish line. The sense of achievement that comes from crossing an island under your own steam.

Whether you're tackling the full marathon, taking on a shorter distance, or supporting friends and family from the sidelines, Wharf2Wharf offers a uniquely Great Barrier experience.

Start Your Adventure with SeaLink

Wharf2Wharf is the perfect reason to visit Aotea Great Barrier Island, but the real adventure begins when you give yourself time to explore.

Bring your vehicle with SeaLink, stay a little longer, and discover why so many people fall in love with Great Barrier Island.
