One of the best ways to experience this unique destination is by meeting the locals. A tour or activity is a perfect way to find out more about the island, its customs and history while meeting interesting characters and fellow travellers.
Outdoor Activities - There are many places of interest to visit during your stay and for outdoor adrenaline adventures there is surfing, diving, kayaking (equipment can be hired on the island), charter fishing trips and hiking to keep you busy. Take your mountain bike and ride some of the many trails on the island. The Department of Conservation (DoC) maintains over 100kms of walking tracks on the island. The duration of walks ranges from 1/2 day to 2-day. A DoC Map is included with your itinerary when you check in for your trip.
Glenfern Sanctuary - The island is home to several species of native birds including brown teal ducks, tuis, wood pigeons, kaka and the black petrel. A trip to Glenfern Sanctuary at Port Fitzroy is a "must" for birdlovers. The sanctuary is now entirely surrounded by a pest-proof fence to keep predators such as rats away from this unique area dedicated to the preservation of the islands birdlife. Vists to Glenfern must be pre-arranged.
Local Museums - Worth a visit are Young's Museum at Okupu; Milk, Honey and Grain at Claris; Gray's Museum at Awana or Medlands Museum. Ask your hosts for contact phone numbers or see your SeaLink Touring Pack for more information.
Crazyhorse Trike - Go for a blast with Steve on his Crazyhorse Trike. A great way to get an adrenaline rush. See your SeaLink Touring Pack for contact details.
